Active Future Sport’s Free Play Programme

Nearly all sports provision is now adult led, children are no longer able to play. Peter Gray sums it all up quite nicely below:

Children learn so much through play and make sense of their surroundings, by removing play we are doing them a huge disservice and certainly so in the sporting arena. What we know is that by aged 16 80% of kids have left sport forever and this is having a huge negative impact in so many parts of their lives and certainly in their mental and physical health. We want to take some sports provision away from an adult let environment and give it back to kids so they can play and be like their heroes.

However, we want to do this whilst satisfying parent’s fears around who is looking after their children and knowing they are in a safe environment. That is not to say that there won’t be some risky play and there will be dangers for children to deal with and overcome.

The Programme:

Our Free Play programme will take place during term times only and children will get to sample all sorts of different sports and games. We will offer them numerous invasion games such as football, tag rugby, netball, basketball and hockey. We will also throw in some racquet sports and no doubt during the summer months some street games such as blocky will find their way into the programme.

The programme will be playing games, there will be not coaching and the children will decide the teams and in most cases the rules. We will be there to facilitate and create a safe environment. Children will get to be their heroes, scoring a try in the Rugby World Cup or perhaps scoring the winning basket in the NBA. Perhaps they want to just try a game they have never played before or even just come along with their mates.

Our programme is open to all. (we would suggest an age range of school years 3-6)

Whilst it is free play you will need to register to take part, coaches will not be allowed to accept children on site without prior agreement.
